It’s our profound joy and privilege to work towards saving children’s lives and decreasing suffering through the power of genomic medicine.”
Among his achievements, Dr. Kingsmore pioneered the development of ultra-rapid Whole Genome Sequencing to decode rare disease in newborns. In 2021, he led the RCIGM team to break his own world speed record by achieving diagnosis via WGS in 13.5 hours.
Dr. Kingsmore came to Rady Children’s in 2015 from Children’s Mercy Kansas City, where he was the Executive Director of Medical Panomics. He previously served as President and CEO of the National Center for Genome Resources; COO of Molecular Staging Inc.; Vice President of Research at CuraGen Corporation; founder of GatorGen; and Assistant Professor at the University of Florida’s School of Medicine.
Dr. Kingsmore received MB, ChB, BAO and DSc degrees from the Queen’s University of Belfast. He trained in clinical immunology in Northern Ireland and did residency in internal medicine and fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists.
Our team shares a passion for ending and ultimately preventing the diagnostic odyssey. As a non-profit, we welcome collaborations that will help drive availability and access to cutting edge genomic medicine.”
After a long and successful trajectory in IVD industry including working for sequencing giants such as Roche, Illumina and Thermo Fisher Scientific Wendy Benson joined the leadership team of RCIGM in 2016. At the Institute, she draws on her deep experience developing business opportunities for molecular diagnostics companies to building strategic alliances that advance RCIGM’s mission and cutting-edge technology access. She oversees a multi-disciplinary team that includes Business Development, Strategy, Operations, Marketing and Business Analytics to help maximize the effectiveness of precious resources.
We are mission-driven to decrease morbidity and mortality among babies and children by accelerating the pace of discovery and implementation of genomic science.”
Dr. Hobbs joined the RCIGM executive leadership team in 2019 bringing extensive experience as a distinguished neonatologist, biomedical researcher, medical educator and hospital administrator. She has expertise in genetic epidemiology and is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Clinical Informatics. At RCIGM, her portfolio includes leading the research and clinical programs, overseeing the clinical genomics team, including physicians, nurses, genetic counselors, project managers, as well as the we and dry lab staff. Previously, Dr. Hobbs was Executive Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and Arkansas Children’s Hospital. During her careers, she has been awarded numerous NIH multi-million grants. In 2016, the Blueridge report on NIH funding noted Dr. Hobbs as the third highest funded researcher in the US and highest overall for pediatric research funding.
There’s no greater motivator than improving children’s lives by utilizing real time genomic sequencing. I am unbelievably lucky to be part of such an amazing mission driven organization.”
Following his retirement as President and CEO of Rady Children’s Hospital in 2019, Dr. Kearns brought his considerable knowledge and leadership to the RCIGM executive team. During his tenure as Rady Children’s CEO, Dr. Kearns led the hospital to several noteworthy achievements including being nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report in all ten of the pediatric specialties surveyed.
Dr. Kearns was also instrumental in fueling the vision for the founding of the Genomics Institute and enlisting the philanthropic support of the Rady family that ultimately made establishment of RCIGM possible through a transformational $120 million gift. As a member of the Institute’s executive team, Dr. Kearns plays a pivotal role by leveraging his vast experience in governmental relations, philanthropy and healthcare system leadership to advance the Institute’s strategic initiatives. Dr. Kearns began his career as an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat surgeon) at Rady Children’s in 1987 and spent the next 30 years helping restore children’s health and in successive leadership roles.
